About Western Tatras National Park (TANAP)

Western Tatras National Park, established in 1949 and located in northern Slovakia along the border with Poland, covers the western section of the High Tatras mountain range. The park spans a rugged landscape characterized by sharp limestone and dolomite peaks reaching heights over 2,400 meters, deep valleys, alpine meadows, and pristine mountain lakes. This area is home to diverse ecosystems ranging from dense coniferous forests at lower elevations to alpine tundra near the summits. It harbors a variety of wildlife including the Tatra chamois, marmots, brown bears, lynx, and numerous bird species such as golden eagles. The park’s well-marked trail system is a major draw for hikers and climbers, offering everything from moderate valley walks to challenging summit routes like those to Baníkov or Ostrý Roháč. In addition to hiking, visitors can enjoy mountaineering, wildlife watching, and winter sports such as skiing and snowshoeing.
